The Chupacabra is a Cryptid (a term is used in cryptozoology to refer to a creature whose existence has been suggested but not scientifically confirmed) said to attack and drain the blood of livestock and possibly other animals, reported mainly in South America.
The first reported attacks occurred in March 1995 in Puerto Rico. In this attack, eight sheep were discovered dead, each with three puncture wounds in the chest area and completely drained of blood.
In later cases goats, chickens, turkeys and other animals have been attacked.
Symbols and Deeper Meanings
The name "Chupacabra" is of Spanish language origin meaning "goat sucker" (from chupar, meaning "to suck", plus cabra, meaning "goat"). Goats are associated with the star sign Capricorn. Capricorn is from caper, 'goat', + cornu, horn, literally 'having horns similar to those of a goat', Capra is the term used for the goat genus. Derivatives: cabriolet (a two-wheeled, one-horse carriage, French cabriole, 'leap of a goat, caper'), cab (car), caper1 (a playful leap or hop), caprine (characteristic of a goat), capriole (a playful leap or jump; a caper). To suck the lifeblood of a goat might symbolize the dampening down of the positive playfullness and spontaneity of the South American peoples. This would be a negative ritual designed to effect the archetypal energies of an aspect of humanity probably to further the aims of subjugation. In some ways the Chupacabra seems like a merging between the vampire and werewolf mythologies.
